Numerical investigation of black hole interiors

Gravitational perturbations which are present in any realistic stellar collapse to a black hole, die off in the exterior of the hole, but experience an infinite blueshift in the interior. This is believed to lead to a slowly contracting lightlike scalar curvature singularity, characterized by a divergence of the hole’s (quasi-local) mass function along the inner horizon. The region near the inn...

Numerical Black Hole Interiors and String Cosmology Initial Conditions

Recent work has proposed the principle of ‘asymptotic past triviality’ to characterize the initial state in the pre-big bang scenario of string cosmology, that it is a generic perturbative solution of the low-energy effective action. Among the more generic sets of solutions which is simple enough to investigate thoroughly, yet complex enough to exhibit interesting behavior, is the gravitydilato...

Quantum effects in black hole interiors.

The Weyl curvature inside a black hole formed in a generic collapse grows, classically without bound, near to the inner horizon, due to partial absorption and blueshifting of the radiative tail of the collapse. Using a spherical model, we examine how this growth is modified by quantum effects of conformally coupled massless fields.

Semiclassical effects in black hole interiors

First-order semiclassical perturbations to the Schwarzschild black hole geometry are studied within the black hole interior. The source of the perturbations is taken to be the vacuum stress-energy of quantized scalar, spinor, and vector fields, evaluated using analytic approximations developed by Page and others (for massless fields) and the DeWitt-Schwinger approximation (for massive fields). ...

Numerical investigation of the threshold for primordial black hole formation

First results of a numerical investigation of primordial black hole formation in the radiation dominated phase of the Early Universe are presented. The simulations follow the gravitational collapse of three different families of high-amplitude density fluctuations imposed at the time of horizon crossing. The threshold for black hole formation, δc ≈ 0.7, is found to be nearly identical for all p...
